Season 2017 Fixtures Published

13th January 2017

The 2017 GMP Scotland fixture list is published below and on the fixtures section of our website.

The packed 34 event calendar sees the season commence on the 11th March following on from the traditional pre-season practice sessions.

For fans of BriSCA F2s, Europe’s premier open wheeled stock car class, it is a big year at the Racewall. Alongside their regular domestic outings, there are a number of big events. The World Qualifying Round on the 22nd April (paired strategically with Crimond Raceways round the following day) will likely attract a few additional visitors looking to get some on track practice ahead of the World Championship Semi Finals on the 5th August. The Semi-Finals will see the top 56 available points scorers race in one of two events. A few may be scratching their heads at the lack of F2s on the second day of racing that weekend, however in an example of collaboration with fellow

promoters, and to provide long-distance F2 drivers the chance for racing on their way home, there will be F2 racing on the Sunday at Barford, whilst the second days racing at the Racewall will provide the Saloon Stock Car drivers in particular with valuable track time ahead of their World Final weekend. That Saloon World weekend does feature a Speedweekend for the BriSCA F2s, with two of the finest trophies in the sport on offer – the George Mac 100 on the Saturday evening and the Nationals trophy on the Sunday afternoon – both titles being defended by 647 Chris Burgoyne. The Scottish Championship is part of our May Speedweekend on the 6th May and always provides one of the highlights of the year, and provides another occasion for all to enjoy.

With the introduction of the zetec engine a few seasons back, the Saloon Stock Cars are in rude health and were arguably the formula of the year in Scotland last year, with plenty of action and good grids. With yet more newcomers to the formula set to join the ranks in 2017 that doesn’t look like changing for the year ahead. The aforementioned 2017 Saloon Stock Car Championship of the World provides the centrepiece of the season with an action pack two day event on the 19th and 20th August. The Scottish Championship takes place in its traditional early October slot whilst the curtain will come down on the season in spectacular form on the 28th & 29th October with the UK SuperBowl and Gordon Barclay Memorial double-header.

The ORCi Stock Rods enjoyed a great year in 2016 with consistently strong grids of cars throughout the season. The introduction of the Raceiver in-car radio system mid-season also saw major benefits in cutting down unnecessary damage. The formula will be the main stars of the early May Speedweekend with their European Championship over the 6th & 7th , an event which is already generating plenty of interest from across the Irish Sea and from South of the Border. Their Scottish Championship is always one of the most strongly contested and will take place in its traditional October time slot. As well as regular racing at the Racewall there are also opportunities to race across the other ORCi promoters, including what looks set to be a highly enjoyable weekends racing in Northern Ireland for the World Final at Ballymena Raceway at the end of August, plus some away dates at Crimond Raceway.

After excellent support from drivers at the Scottish Championship meeting late last season, there is set to be a series of three 2L Banger events during the year, supplemented by two events for the popular Micro Bangers and a few to the Rookie Banger format sprinkled in for good measure. For many though one of the highlights of the year is the BBA Unlimited Banger World Cup on the 8th April which continues attract a host of star names from across the Banger world. The Prostocks will also be back in action although there has been an attempt at the Racewall to ensure the formula is not over-extended in its outings given the need to rebuild the class to its former strength. The quality of the racing was not in question however in 2016 and with the British Championship on offer at the end of June there is plenty on offer for drivers to aim for. There are currently proposals for the launch of a Prostock-Basics class, which in essence will allow new drivers (so not to take away from the existing driver base) to race with basic stripped out cars similar to those seen on track at recent years Legends Day Speedway events.

The 1300 Stock Cars proved the doubters wrong in 2016 with some excellent racing and progressive growth in car numbers which ultimately saw 19 drivers on track for their final meeting of the year. In 2017 we look to ensure the good spirit and camaraderie in the pits continues, combined with hard but fair racing on the track. A sensible expansion of fixtures at the Racewall alongside 7 away fixtures at Barford (where there has also been interest from local drivers in joining the class) plus a return to Crimond Raceway for a popular Summer Speedweekend provides plenty to look forward to. The 1300s will now also form part of the Season Finale with their own SuperBowl and Scottish Open title as they join the Saloon Stock Cars in a Bumper-fest to end the year.

The future of our sport will be well represented with a busy year of events for the Ministox and Micro F2s, which again continue the trend of previous seasons by being paired together wherever possible. The Ministox provided some of the closest finishes and toughest competition of any class and will be sure to thrill once again as only they can. The Micro F2s simply look the part on track and won a lot of supporters as the junior drivers raced just like the senior class in all out style. The emphasis remains on fun and participation and as always it will be interesting to see who received a new toy for the year ahead in either of the junior classes from Father Christmas.

The Racewall provides the opportunity to see the high speed National Hot Rods at their best, with the opportunity to stretch their legs on the straights and an outside line which rewards bravery. As is usual, the NHR’s will contest a series of qualifying rounds to determine who will be Scotland’s representatives on the World Final Grid. For those that like their hot rod racing there is also the eagerly anticipated launch of the Classic Hot Rods as a bonafide formula in Scotland, and the class seems to have captured the imagination with a growing band of drivers in a stunning array of classic machinery which will capture the interest of fans.

As well as our high quality line up of regular formulae, it is always great to welcome visiting classes for a once a year trip to Scotland, and judging by the feedback we receive from drivers and race organisers – they love the opportunity to race in front of a large, appreciative and knowledgeable Racewall crowd. Our May Speedweekend features the Scottish Championship for both the StoxKarts and Mascars. The StoxKarts provides plenty of thrills and spills and don’t forget to chec out their website as there may be a few opportunities to get out on track in one of their hire vehicles. The Mascars return after a couple years absence, and the scaled down Nascar inspired machines really do look and sound the part round the Racewall. In their traditional August Bank Holiday fixture the Heritage F2 Stock Cars will contest their Gold Cup. The drivers put their all into the racing but also know how to do so in the right spirit – as much about the social side off the track as it is about the racing on it. Whilst after a one off outing last year which impressed many, we have managed to slot in a trio of outings for the Crimond Raceway Hot Saloon class.
A thrilling 2017 in prospect then with promises plenty of incident and drama as can only be delivered at the Home of Scottish Stock Car Racing – The Racewall!
