Season 2018 Full Preview
12th January 2018
In 2018 GMP Scotland celebrates the 30th season of stock car racing since the Racewall was born back in 1989.
As is typical, the excitement to the new racing season will start to build as driver’s debut their new or refurbished race machines at one of the open practice sessions which will take place on 18th and 25th February and 4th March before the first race action commences on Saturday 10th March featuring the BriSCA F2s, Saloon Stock Cars, 1300 Stock Cars and Prostocks.
Each of our formulas will make their racing debuts over the opening weeks but we won’t have to wait long for our first major event of the year, the BBA Unlimited Banger World Cup on the 14th April. The Bangers have a full schedule of events in 2018 and following on from the excellent driver support and entertainment shown in 2017, the emphasis will be on racing fixtures rather than novelty events, with car formats clustered to help drivers with their car build schedules. They also have their Micro Banger Supreme Championship on the 28th July, with a Scottish Championship double to end the year, with the Unlimited Banger version making a return on the 22nd September and the 2L version on the 13th October – an evening that will also feature the Scottish Championships for the Stock Rods.
Our first speedweekend of the year is a little later than usual over the 2nd and 3rd June, but great things come to those who wait, with a weekends racing stacked with championships in prospect. The Saloon Stock Cars will contest their National title over the weekend along with the Raymond Gunn Tribute., whilst the BriSCA F2s also have two days of action to look forward to with their Scottish Championship on the Saturday and World Qualifying points on offer on the Sunday. The Stock Rods and Ministox will both compete for their ORCi Championships, and both will serve up tremendous thrills and spills, whilst the Mascars pay a welcome visit again, providing a flavour of the USA to our big June weekend. We also have another very welcome visit later in the year from the Heritage F2 Stock Cars, the drivers in the class being superb ambassadors for their formula and always enjoying their big night in Scotland.
The major events continue in June when in association with our friends at Startrax we welcome to the BriSCA F1 Stock Cars back to the Racewall for their Scottish Championship. As usual they will be joined by the superfast BriSCA Ministox and the thrill a minute StoxKarts. Adding to a high quality line-up that evening will be the BriSCA F2s and Saloon Stock Cars – only the best at the Home of Scottish Stock Car racing.
The 1300 Stock Cars enjoyed an excellent season in 2017 with more promised in the year to come with more drivers set to take to the track. Alongside a regular roster of racing will be the introduction of a Gold Roof Series during the year culminating in the series final race on the 29th September with qualifying rounds both here at the Racewall and at Barford and Crimond.
GMP Scotland are again delighted to be working with our friends at Autospeed following on from the huge success of the 2017 Saloon World Final weekend and this time over the 1st and 2nd of September the Stock Rods will compete for their World Championship – the Racewall being an obvious choice for the South West promoters given how well suited the formula is to the track and the fan base the formula enjoys in Scotland. Looking to outshine the Stock Rods will be the Saloon Stock Cars competing in their ORCi Championship along with the inaugural Jim Purdie Trophy whilst a top weekends BriSCA f2 racing is also in prospect with the prestigious Mac 100 Trophy and Nationals title up for grabs over the weekend.
The Prostocks have a big year ahead with both their World Cup (22nd September) and Scottish Championship (20th October) being held at the Racewall. The surprise hit of 2017, the Prostock Basics enjoy a full programme of fixtures for the class aimed at encouraging new drivers onto the track.
There are high speed thrills during the year with the National Hot Rods rounding out their World Qualifying Series before the Summer break and starting off their next one after! Following a successful first year, the Classic Hot Rods are back for another Scottish Series and once again at the request of the drivers the formula will feature for an additional fixture on the Sunday of the SuperBowl weekend.
The stars of tomorrow racing today is the theme of the racing from the Ministox and MicroF2s during the year. The Ministox continue to serve up some of the finest racing of any kind on the tracks from the drivers aged 11-15. As usual there will be a new crop of drivers joining the established names during 2018 hoping to take over from those drivers who have reached retirement age. The MicroF2 drivers are the youngest out on track aged just 7-11. The formula has grown tremdously in recent years and serves up plenty of exciting racing from the brave young pilots honing their skills.
The UK SuperBowl weekend for the Saloon Stock Cars normally brings the curtain down on the Racewall’s season but in order to accommodate fixture planning associated with the BriSCA F2 National Series we get to enjoy an extra weeks racing on the 3rd November which there are sure to be sparks flying everywhere you look as the BriSCA F2 National Series comes to town and will see upto 15 of the UKs best drivers battle it out for the right to wear the Silver Roof in 2019.
The Saloon Stock Cars also see the introduction of a National Series to determine the winner of the Silver Roof. To accommodate this new series the Scottish Championship moves earlier in the season than has been the case (the Champion will be eligible for the National Series) and the Racewall itself will host a round of the National Series on the Sunday of the UK SuperBowl weekend.
A packed season of racing in prospect then at the Home of Scottish Stock Car racing – the Racewall. We look forward to the year ahead and welcoming you to the track.
