Matty Munro Memorial

20th March 2015

The second staging of the Matty Munro Memorial for the Saloon Stock Cars will be held on Saturday 25th April as part of our great April Speedweekend. The race was won last year by 661 Graeme Shevill.

Andrew ‘Matty’ Munro was born 27th April 1944. He was an avid and committed stock car fan, mechanic, and one time banger driver, since 1980. Back in the early days, he was a mechanic for Saloon Stock car driver Keith Jarman. For a bet, and a bit of fun he entered the Scottish Banger Championship at Armadale Raceway. He completed 6 laps, which exceeded his expectations.

Matty was a regular round the Racewall since its relocation from Newtongrange. He traded his toolbox for paint and paper, drawing pictures of race cars, framing them and presenting them to the drivers the following week. Matty trailed the  length and breadth of the country following his beloved Saloon Stock Cars.

In March 2014 Matty lost his long fight against cancer. During his treatment he would often go AWOL from the hospital, always on a Saturday night between 6 and 10pm. No prizes for guessing where he could be found. He is sadly missed by his family and friends who have put up the Matty Munro Memorial that will be raced for the second time in the Saloon Stock Car Grand Final on Saturday 25th April alongside the World Qualifying Round for the BriSCA F2s.
